 Finally - a great box fan! We use box fans for white noise as well as circulation. The three "Galaxy" brand fans I had died within a year and I could not find more box fans at Wal-mart during winter. After reading the reviews here I bought two of these Lasko brand fans. One for us, one for my daughter. We run them at night, all night every night. This is a quality fan - it weighs more than the cheap Galaxy fans at the discount store and makes more noise. This tower fan is much stronger than other towers, which is exactly what I wanted. Basically, you just plop it down wherever you choose and aim it using the remote. Because of the volume of air it circulates, it isn't quiet on its highest setting. I attribute that to the strength of the motor and the noise generated by so much air being moved. However, the medium and low settings are quieter. If your primary goal is to have a quiet room, maybe an overhead fan would work better. The lowest speed is a gentle breeze, the middle speed can cool down a room fast and the highest speed is perfect for larger areas or to keep a room cool and breezy on even the hottest day. I have a severe heat intolerance (as in I can't even tolerate having hair - have to have head shaved) and I'm into making realistic dolls that have heat set paints (and some fumes). My bedroom was really hot and stuffy and I was not sleeping good due to this, so I ordered the twin fan. I don't see that it is very noisy at all, but it is well worth the money and then some. Has high and low and you can also turn it around and pull the hot air to the outside. I don't have to turn on the a/c yet as the temps have still been low, thus saving on the bill. Just received this fan yesterday. Assembly was remarkably easy, and it works beautifully and quietly. At the highest speed it really puts out a lot of air; enough to tip the upper part of the fan backward very slightly. The low and middle speeds are enough for most uses, and it just about the only sound you get is of the air rushing out. This is pointed at the wall above my bed and the airflow, even on lower settings, is tremendous. I will toss out that it's not quite as quiet as some reviews may lead you to believe.
