My college is very old, and the dorms don't have air conditioning. I live on the third floor of a 125 year old dorm. As you can imagine, it gets really hot. Lasko 4000 Air Stik Ultra-Slim Oscillating Fan

I never understood why my co-workers have fans in their cubicles until I got a thermometer in my cubicle. I thought in a thermostat controlled environment, it really isn't necessary. But I was wrong. The temperature is relativity constant throughout the day, but we have cool (72 degrees) and warm days (79 degrees). That 7 degree difference is very noticeable and this fan is perfect for the warm days. It is about 4 inches wide at the base and several inches taller than a foot. At high setting, you will hear the motor spin if you have it at your desk, but it shouldn't bother your colleagues in their cubicles next to you. At the low setting, I only notice it because of the wind that is blowing at my face. The oscillating function is useful as this is not a Dyson "Air Multiplier" so you might get annoyed by the "chopping" wind (I did) that this fan and any fan creates. But the desk version of the Dyson is probably 4 - 5x the size of this fan (when you count the circumference of the ring) that you will be glad to still have so much space on this desk with this fan compare to any other fan or the Dyson. - Customer Reviews

I've got one of those houses which was never intended to be inhabited without air conditioning - windows which don't open all the way, dead end hallways with no vent for hot air, and so forth. Lasko 2521 Oscillating Stand Fan, 16-Inch

I've found Lasko products to be generally pretty awesome. I've purchased a couple of their heaters in the past and now this fan and all their stuff has so far exceded expectations. The only negative thing I can say about this fan is that the plastic cage or grill is somewhat cheaply made. Despite this I have had zero problems with the fan. It's very quiet, doesn't vibrate, oscillates perfectly fine. I'll elaborate about the cage: * There were a couple of very small blemishes from the manufacturing process. Nothing noticeable. Had I not put the pieces together myself I never would have noticed them. * The clips that hold to front grill to rear grill don't seem very secure. Still, I've knocked this fan over a few times and the front piece still hasn't popped off like I thought it would. That's it. Hardly worth mentioning but I do so for the sake of earnest thoroughness. I cannot do without this little fan. I have 2 of them now. They serve 2 vital purposes: air flow and noise control. The swivel feature is magnifique, so that the fan can be pointed at the ceiling, which gets the air going all around the space, not just right at you. Also, in chilly weather, the warm air which has risen to the upper levels of your room will be moved around, thanks to this little wonder.
